Explore Sashiko a Little More Deeply

To understand sashiko a little more deeply, I am gradually researching and bringing together not only stitching techniques and patterns, but also the history, everyday life, cloth, clothing, materials, and historical contexts surrounding sashiko in Japan.

This Journal is the larger home for several themes I would like to continue exploring: sashiko history, patterns, basic knowledge, and practical tips learned through stitching and teaching.

Sashiko History

When and where did sashiko begin? Rather than looking for a single origin story, I read historical books, records, and research from Japan and look at sashiko alongside the clothing, materials, regional differences, and everyday lives surrounding it.

The first series, now complete, is Sashiko Journal | Tracing Sashiko Through Historical Sources. Through ten questions about cloth, mending, clothing, patterns, and stitching, the series looks beyond technique alone and considers the historical conditions and everyday lives behind sashiko.

Sashiko Patterns

Sashiko has been stitched in many different patterns. I plan to explore their forms, regional differences, historical sources, and what can—and sometimes cannot—be traced about the stories or meanings connected with them.

Rather than assuming that every pattern has one fixed meaning, I would like to look carefully at what the sources actually tell us.

Sashiko Basics

Fabric, thread, needles, tools, stitching methods, and more. This section will gradually bring together useful knowledge for anyone who wants to understand sashiko more clearly or begin stitching for themselves.

Materials and approaches can vary, so the aim is not to present one method as the only correct way, but to share practical foundations and the differences I have learned through experience.

Sashiko Tips

There are many small things that become clearer through actually stitching and teaching sashiko. How to handle the cloth, how to make stitching more comfortable, and what to try when something does not go as expected—these practical discoveries will also become part of the Journal.

I will continue adding them little by little whenever I find something worth sharing.
