Discover Hitomezashi Sashiko

A Traditional Japanese Stitching Technique

Sashiko has become popular around the world in recent years, often as a form of visible mending.
In Japan, however, sashiko is also enjoyed as a beautiful traditional handcraft, with many regional stitching styles passed down through generations.

In this workshop, you’ll experience Hitomezashi (One-Stitch Sashiko), a distinctive style created by repeating simple running stitches to form intricate geometric patterns.
The design you’ll stitch is called Ajisai (Hydrangea Pattern), inspired by the delicate clusters of hydrangea flowers that bloom during Japan’s rainy season.
Although made from simple straight stitches, the finished pattern is surprisingly elegant and beautifully represents Japanese design.

A Small Tool with a Long History

Handmade for Everyday Life

In Japan, pincushions (Hariyama) have long been treasured by people who enjoy sewing and embroidery.
More than just sewing tools, they reflect the Japanese appreciation for craftsmanship and handmade objects used every day.
During this workshop, you’ll decorate your pincushion with the traditional Ajisai sashiko pattern, creating something both practical and beautiful.
