In recent years, Sashiko has become increasingly popular around the world, especially as a form of visible mending and slow stitching.
In Japan, however, sashiko is also enjoyed simply as a relaxing and beautiful handcraft. One of the most popular projects is making a sashiko dish cloth (Fukin)—a practical piece of fabric decorated with traditional Japanese patterns.
This workshop introduces you to this authentic Japanese style of Sashiko. Rather than repairing clothing, you’ll create a beautiful cloth that you can use at home or display as a handmade keepsake from Japan.

This workshop is designed especially for beginners.
You’ll learn everything from how to hold the needle and prepare the thread to the basic running stitch that forms the foundation of sashiko.
You’ll also choose your favorite pattern and thread color, making every finished piece completely unique.
Because the class is limited to a small number of participants, you’ll receive personal guidance throughout the workshop and can ask questions whenever you need.

Workshop Flow
STEP 1 : Choose Your Pattern & Thread (Approx. 5 min)
Browse a selection of traditional Japanese sashiko patterns and colorful threads before choosing your favorite combination.
Selecting your design is part of the fun.
- If you normally wear reading glasses for close work, please bring them.
- All tools are provided.
STEP 2 : Learn & Stitch (Approx. 70 min)
Together we’ll cover:
- Preparing your cloth
- Understanding the needle and thread
- Starting and finishing stitches
- Traditional running stitch technique
- How to follow the pattern
The instructor demonstrates every step before you begin, making the class easy to follow even if you’ve never held a sashiko needle before.
Please note that your project will not be completed during the workshop. You’ll take it home to finish while enjoying the relaxing rhythm of sashiko.

After the workshop, you can take everything home and continue stitching at your own pace.
Please bring only a pair of scissors if you’d like to trim the thread at home. If you use reading glasses for close work, we recommend bringing them as well.
After the workshop, you’re welcome to browse and purchase a selection of sashiko supplies and handmade accessories available in our shop.
