Plan description

Sashiko in the Past — A Craft of Survival,
Long ago, Sashiko was born out of necessity. Layers of worn cloth were stitched together, allowing old fabric to be reborn as something strong and usable again. This simple act of stitching was an essential part of daily life in every household.

Sashiko Today — A Craft of Decoration and hobby
Today, Sashiko is appreciated primarily as decoration and hobby. In Japan, it has become a popular pastime, alongside embroidery and cross-stitch, enjoyed as a form of handcraft and personal expression.

Future
Here is in my point of view.
Since around 2010, the practice of “Visible Sashiko Mending” has been spreading internationally. This method of repairing torn clothing with patches and visible stitching has drawn attention as both practical and artistic. At its heart lies the Japanese spirit of mottainai—a respect for resources and the belief that things should be repaired and reused as long as possible. This philosophy is now gaining renewed interest in Japan as well.

Here I would like to introduce basic Sashiko mending and darning techniques through making a pouch.
And besides, this session includes a gift which is contained my favorite items. There are very helpful to make your original items.
Even further, I present a booklet I made, “Sashiko -From the Past to the Present, and Beyond -“. I’ve read various Japanese references and compiled this booklet in my own words. It contains valuable information that cannot be found on the internet.
